Being listed on this year’s Dow Jones Sustainability Index is much more than just an accolade

Joe Franses, our Director of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, explains what it means to our business

Today we found out that Coca-Cola Enterprises has been listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI)  for the first time. For anyone who isn’t familiar with the DJSI, it is a huge achievement – it is the most widely recognized sustainability index in the world. 

The Index is highly competitive. Each year 3400 companies are invited to participate, yet only a small percentage of companies in each sector – the best in class - are admitted into the Index. In fact this year only three beverage companies, including Coca-Cola Enterprises, have been included on the DJSI World Index. 

The Index is based on an internationally recognized assessment methodology, developed by sustainability investment specialists, RobecoSAM. It provides a strong platform for companies that want to adopt best practices in terms of sustainability. 

The DJSI tracks the stock performance of the world's leading companies in terms of economic, environmental and social criteria. It also serves as a benchmark for investors who integrate sustainability considerations into their portfolios. 

The external recognition is excellent; however its significance is even greater. It’s like getting strong exam results, but recognizing that the achievement is underpinned by years of hard work. That’s what our listing means: our hard work to integrate sustainability into the core of our business is having a significant impact.

For CCE, inclusion on the DJSI represents everything we’ve achieved since we launched our Sustainability Plan in 2011. We set targets that would really stretch our business and we’re proud to have driven some great successes, including a 29 percent reduction in the carbon footprint of our core business operations since 2007.

DJSI also helps us to better understand the business value of sustainability initiatives – something we’ve been working hard to achieve in recent years.

By benchmarking our performance against the rest of our industry, the DJSI will also help us to see what progress we’re making and understand how to further develop our leadership position.

None of this is to say that we can rest on our laurels. External stakeholder expectations move on quickly. So while it’s a significant achievement to be included on the DJSI, we continue to have ambitious sustainability targets to meet. We’ve always been of the mindset that it’s not just about reaching our sustainability goals, it’s about surpassing them. So more hard work ahead, but we move forward knowing that we have already made significant progress.
