Sports and fun at Norway’s Youth Olympic Winter Games

More than 1,100 young athletes from 70 countries took part in the second Youth Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway last month. Coca-Cola was a sponsor of the games and ten CCE employees had the opportunity to volunteer there. Grete Roer, Field Sales Representative and one of our University Talent Programme graduate, was one of them.

“I’ve recently joined CCE on the UTP graduate scheme, so the Youth Olympic Games were my first opportunity to be an ambassador and experience an event sponsored by Coca-Cola up close. I felt so lucky that it was happening in my home country.

I think it is great that Coca-Cola sponsors events that encourage young people all around the globe to get together to share the joy of sports, and at the same time enables them to meet people from other cultures and environments.

So I spent two days in Lillehammer volunteering in our own Coca-Cola shop. We had a lot of visitors, including families or groups of students from schools and it got very busy at times! I helped to run a quiz for visitors during which we asked them questions about our range of products and our history of supporting sports event – and that was very popular!

I also enjoyed some of the different sporting events. Walking around the city of Lillehammer was fun; it was all dressed up in Youth Olympics branding and the atmosphere was really energetic with all the school groups who were there to watch the games and events. You could try out lots of different sports and visit a separate learn & share centre. During the day, there were different lectures and talks from former, renowned athletes and in the evenings there was a programme of concerts.

Because I work in Field Sales, I also took the time to visit some shops in Lillehammer as I was curious to see how our local Field Sales teams had prepared the different outlets. It was a great learning experience.

I would definitely volunteer again – it was great fun to do something different and get to know people from our business that I wouldn’t normally meet. I also enjoyed interacting with all the young people visiting our Coke shop, and learning more about the Youth Olympics.”
