On Tuesday 1st October, Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) held its first Sustainability Innovation Summit supported by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The Summit saw over 250 influential delegates and stakeholders take part in the day.

The Summit explored how organisations can embrace disruptive approaches through innovation, collaboration and technology, with a range of entrepreneurial and pioneering speakers from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, McKinsey, Goldman Sachs, OpenIDEO, Plantagon and Zipcar, among others, with the keynote close from Peter Schwartz, chief futurist at Salesforce.com.

Bringing people of diverse backgrounds together yielded rich discussions throughout the day, and learning from organizations that are reshaping the interconnectivity between business and society was genuinely inspiring. This can be seen in the ‘highlights video’.

The morning presentations and panel discussions were followed by an afternoon of break-out sessions led by CCE.

  • The first session, surrounding ‘packaging of the future’ discussed the need for enhanced consumer education on recycling as well as the importance of industry-wide best practice sharing.
  • The ‘Zero Carbon manufacturing’ discussion raised the importance of delivering carbon reductions throughout the supply chainand highlighted the opportunities that can be gained from energy efficiency initiatives and the use of renewable energy.
  • The third session was about ‘how to drive consumer behaviour change on recycling’. Here the discussion highlighted the opportunity for brand owners and the importance of focusing on the value of post-consumer packaging.
  • The final breakout session focused on ‘Driving Sustainability throughout the Value Chain’. Here the discussion highlighted the importance of businesses adopting value chain thinking and the need for enhanced collaboration and engagement.
